SPT March Challenge--8 is Great!

Okay I really thought the Love stuff was a stretch for me...but "8"??

I didn't even know where to start.

So last night I went to a Bunco party and employed the help of the group. I was subbing in this game so I did not know most of these people, and now they think I am absolutely insane.
So with help of the group and especially one lady named Sherry(sp?) we went a little crazy eights.

$8

8 wins

Roll of 8

8 pretzels/8 light reflections

8 plastic knifes

8 magazines

8 dinner plates

If you're counting that would be 8 things of 8! I know this is not exactly what the rules read but we got caught up in the fun of it, and I'm sure fun is defintely in the spirit of the challenge.

In good company.

My daughter has a different type of book report due each quarter in her Language Arts class (that would be English Class to all of us who went to school in the dark ages) So far we she has made a board game, a diorama, and a cereal box. I don't understand what happened to writing a book report, it is a Language Arts class, right?

The board game turned out pretty good and she turned it in early and received full credit plus extra for turning it early. The grading seemed rather lenient. The second project report was the diorama which was a sad depiction of Peter Pan using all the Disney character figurines we had in the house redressed to represent Peter Pan characters. A lose representation at best. Also turned in early, also received full credit plus extra.

Friday she brought home her cereal box. It was a box covered in some fashion and then was to to be filled with facts from an autobiography/biography. She got in the car and tossed it at me. " I would've gotten an 80% on this if I hadn't turned it in early." My response was "What?....On the cereal box that really seemed like your best effort so far, that project?"

So we sat and talked about it for a few minutes and she got me up to speed on the whole situation. So I suggested she that she talk to the teacher about it. You know actually use her language art skills. So we decided to see if we can catch up with her before she leaves.

We catch up her as she's leaving the building and Jenna did a great job asking her what she should have done differently to make a better grade. She gave us a few suggestions and then I had to step in. She got points taken off in the creativity section but not for creativity, for lack of information. What?? Now, I'm trying to practice diplomacy, because after all she did get an 90%, but I did calmly point out that if she wanted a certain amount of information than that should have been what was on the criteria sheet, because she met all the requirements that were on her information sheet, just like she had on the previous two. She followed the checklist, we checked it twice. Trying not to push too hard, because I really have a fly under the radar kinda kid, we walked satisfied that she will make clearer criteria for the next one and that she probably should have for this one, you think? Case closed.....

Until I got to small group tonight and the other moms there with kids in her class had exact same problem, points off for creativity. Nobody is quite sure what to do? I think if you are reading this and your sixth grader at Bethany Middle School had the same thing happen you should know you are in good company and let the teacher know that the criteria was not clear or a fair representation of her expectations. Of course all of this could just be that control freak in me rearing its ugly head. Take it for what it's worth.

Edit 3/2/09
The language arts teacher decided to give everyone 10 points on the book cereal box because the instructions were not clear. Yeah her!!! It doesn't fix the overall problem of the project. She should've graded them again on the criteria she handed out. But....

And so it goes...

I took Jenna and Savanna shopping in the Target (Memorial) travel aisle today. Which by the way is very skimpy compared to what used to be in our Target (Rockwell). We had fun finding silly little items that cost way too much per ounce in comparison to regular sized items but feel way more special for a trip. We ate some cheap Target popcorn with our Happy Hour Sonic drinks and just were having a great little outing. We hit the Mall for a few minutes to check out Claire's and the Disney Store. (Okay, I can't believe I worked for Claire's for seven years. I was in there for 20 minutes and the walls felt like they were coming in on me. Man, I am old!) We were headed back to drop Savanna off talking about how great our trip is going to be and the rides Savanna thinks she wants try, if even just once. La..La..La having a nice little jaunt.

Battery light starts flickering.....a little bit of a rattle...can I make it to Savanna's grandmother's house?...was that a little squeal?...we just spent $300 on this stupid car...more weird noises...just two more blocks...is that smoke?...okay, I can park it here...more smoke...lots of smoke...calling Jim...!!!

Jim arrives....He thinks it's a goner. It was on it's last leg but were praying to get to the end of the year with it, heck, I never go anywhere that isn't off Rockwell between 122nd and 10th, well except today. Oh well, I'm sure the walking will do me good. How would I look on a moped?(don't answer that) So maybe we can take our own food into Disney World? and so it goes...

Song of my heart today.

Everything You Are Lyrics
Performed by- Larnelle Harris
Free MP3 Download - "Everything You Are"by Larnelle Harris

Chorus
1Everything You are Is all I'll ever need
There is not a path I take
Where You cannot lead
How can I be less
Than what You ask of me
When everything You are
Is all I'll ever need

Verse
1Lord I hate to take Your time
'Cause You've heard it all before
But there are questions on my mind
I can't find the answers for
In spite of how it may appear
You know that my heart is true
And I find the truth I'm searching for In You

Verse 2
In a world of compromise
It's so hard to really know
If satifaction truly lies
In what you can call your own
Father help me separate
Between all my wants and needs
Till I only seek the things
You'd have for me

Ev'rything You are
Is all I'll ever need

A Thankful Heart.

I started working a totally different post, but then two things happen.
  1. I got the news that a church friend who had to have breast cancer surgery today had come through well. She only had to have a lumpectomy. No signs elsewhere. Things went well.
  2. I read that a new friend's husband had a bad PET scan report. They have already been through this 3 times(?) with him and cancer with a child, too.

Talk about an emotional roller coaster, and it's not even my roller coaster. These are people that pass through my life and have children my daughter's age. We have things in common, we go to the same church, we live in the same town. But that's where the similarities end. I have never been through anything remotely as trying as these families.

I find it hard to go to sleep because of these two events of the evening. When my head does finally hit the pillow it will be with a grateful and humble heart. I will pray for these two families. I am sure that God is feeling their mixed emotions as well, and will give them a new peace for a new circumstance.

I will try to be more patient tomorrow. I will try to remember that anyone I meet on my path may be going through something unspeakable, and respond with mercy. I will try to treat my family with the love the deserve from me. I will try respond not by WWJD but what would Jesus have me to do. Yes, I lay down with grateful and humble heart.

20 years = Diamonds

Happy Anniversary to me! Jim got me this lovely pendant and necklace, of course we were not supposed to get gifts, we are going to Disney World in 19 days!! All he got was a lousy wallet. Thanks honey, it's beautiful. Please focus on the jewelry and not the leathery like skin that is my decolletage.
